📶 The Pathway — How It Actually Works in Australia
01
Learner Licence
Complete a pre-learner course at an approved training school — typically a one or two-day practical course. Requirements vary slightly by state but the process is similar nationwide. You leave with an L plate and the ability to ride supervised on public roads.
02
Provisional Licence
After a minimum period on your Ls (varies by state — typically 3–12 months), complete a licence test or MOST (Motorcycle Operator Skills Test). In QLD, most riders go through QRide with an approved provider instead. You're now legal to ride solo on public roads.
03
Build Road Skills
Most experienced riders recommend building solid road skills before taking a bike to a track. Understanding how your bike behaves at speed, in corners and under braking in everyday conditions makes track day learning much faster and safer.
04
Track Day
Open lapping days, come as you are. Your own street bike is fine at most novice-level track days — most circuits only require a few basic bike checks (tyre condition, fluids taped up, loose items removed). No racing licence needed for most ride days.
💡 Track Riding vs Road Riding — What Changes
The biggest difference is that on a track there are no oncoming cars, no pedestrians, no gravel on corners, and run-off areas instead of gutters and poles. What surprises most new track riders is how much faster and more physical it is than road riding — corners arrive much sooner, braking points are much later, and the whole thing is a genuine workout. Start in the slower group, find your feet, and build from there. One track day will teach you more about riding your bike than a year on the road.
📷 Step 1 — Getting Licensed: The Best Training Schools
The training school you choose matters more than most people realise — the difference between a nervous, uncertain new rider and a confident one often comes down to the quality of instruction in those first few days. 🔧 Step 2 — Getting Your Bike Track-Ready
Most circuits running novice or intermediate track days are reasonable about what bikes they'll accept — you don't need a race-prepared machine. A well-maintained street bike is fine for a first track day at most Australian venues. That said, there are a few things to sort before you show up.
📋 Basic Track Day Prep — What Most Circuits Require
01Tape up fluids. Coolant, oil and brake fluid reservoirs all need to be taped. Spills on circuit are a serious hazard. Use electrical tape over caps and reservoirs — organisers will check this at scrutineering.
02Check tyre condition. No cracking, cords, or worn-through centres. Most organisers will look at your tyres at scrutineering. Worn tyres don't just fail the check — they're genuinely dangerous at track speeds.
03Remove loose items. Mirrors (or tape them), remove mirrors, licence plates, panniers, tank bags. Anything that can come off at speed needs to go. Some events require mirrors be removed; others just need them taped over.
04Check brake pads and brake fluid. Braking is more intense on a circuit than on the road — brakes that are borderline on the road aren't good enough for track use. Fresh fluid matters; brake fluid absorbs moisture and loses effectiveness when hot.
05Gear up properly. Most Australian track days require a leather jacket (or one-piece suit), gloves, helmet and boots. Some require a back protector. Textile gear may be accepted at slower-paced events — check with the organiser before you show up.
🏁 Step 3 — The Circuits That Run Motorcycle Track Days

🔍 How to Find Track Day Dates
Individual circuit websites are your best source for upcoming motorcycle ride day and track day dates. Most Australian circuits run these through affiliated motorcycle clubs — AMCN (Australian Motorcycle Club Network), state-based motorcycle clubs, and circuits' own ride day programs. Events book out quickly, especially at Phillip Island and Sydney Motorsport Park, so getting on mailing lists for your local circuits is worth doing. Some track day organisers like Stay Upright and Ride-Tek also run dedicated circuit training days at multiple venues.
